DOUG IS IN THE LOCAL NEWS!

Doug lives at one of New Haven Farm Home’s Richmond sites.

He recently had a chat with Roz from both Diverse Hawkesbury and the Hills Hawkesbury Independent Magazine, sharing his interests in art, culture and his Darug heritage.

Doug inspired Roz to write an article about the importance of taking the time to talk with and listen to members of our community, like Doug, as there is always something that we can learn from one another.

FAMILY AND FRIENDS NIGHT

On Tuesday 19th June New Haven Farm Home clients, their friends, family members and our staff had a fantastic evening catching up over a tasty meal at Grill’d Rouse Hill.

At our Annual General Meeting last year there was a lot of interest expressed in the idea of regular family and friends events which provide a social avenue for families to catch up with one another and get together with their family members and staff from New Haven Farm Home.

Our evening at Grill’d was the first of these events and it was a great night. Just over 60 people braved the cold weather for the casual evening of delicious food prepared by the Grill’d Rouse Hill team and music performed by some local community members.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, and to Laurina, Felicia and the Grill’d team for their help and support in preparing the event, and to Rouse Hill Town Centre for providing us with additional space to hold our event.

CLIENT UPDATES – SEPTEMBER 2018

New Haven Farm Home clients have been working towards their individual goals over the past few months and have achieved some great things.

Here are just a few!

A CATCH UP WITH BEN

Ben moved into one of New Haven Farm Home’s Richmond based sites earlier this year.

Ben has a real interest in martial arts movies, particularly those staring Jackie Chan or Bruce Lee. This interest influenced Ben’s ambition to learn and develop skills in Taekwondo.

Ben trains in Taekwondo twice a week. He really enjoys the sport and is developing some great skills. Ben is always very determined and focussed during lessons and training as he works towards his next belt grading.

Learning about history and movie trivia is another interest of Ben’s. He recently took a trip into the city with his New Haven Farm Home support worker to see the Madame Tussauds Exhibition in Sydney. Ben really liked learning new trivia and facts about his favourite famous icons and their history and was very impressed by the lifelike detail replicated in the wax displays.

While in the city, Ben also visited the Sydney Aquarium and enjoyed learning about the different species of fish and sharks that he saw.

Ben is also very interested in video games and anime and enjoys chatting to people who share his interests.

THIRD SECTOR AWARDS FINALIST!

New Haven Farm Home would like to congratulate Jacques, our Chief Executive Officer who was announced as a finalist for the CEO of the Year Award in the 2018 Third Sector Awards this week!

Jacques is one of 5 finalists being considered for this award, which recognises and celebrates Australia’s most notable executive leaders and decision-makers in the not-for-profit sector.

This is very exciting news for New Haven Farm Home – not only are we very happy for Jacques, but this is a wonderful recognition of the dedication, initiative, hard work and innovative thinking of the New Haven Farm Home team and leaders.

New Haven Farm Home has been in operation for over 55 years. Prior to Jacques’ leadership, our organisation operated as a large residential service, with commercial kitchen and laundry; cleaning staff; many clients sharing rooms; support staff focused on task based actions, and a ‘one size fits all’ group mentality approach was our day to day.

Today, New Haven Farm Home has a person centred focus. Staff support clients to become active, contributing members of their community through participation in community activities; opening and operating individual bank accounts; completing their personal shopping within local shopping centres; joining local groups such as libraries, choir groups, gyms, bingo and trivia groups, and participating in life and the community with the same opportunities as everyone else. Individuals are supported to learn to cook and develop their independent living and social skills and are respected and appreciated as individuals with differing interests and needs.

Jacques has also been instrumental in the physical expansion and development of New Haven Farm Home, enabling opportunities for our service to grow and expand in the community. New Haven Farm Home has only recently opened a third Richmond town centre based site enabling greater inclusion, independence and social interaction opportunities for people living with a disability.

The Third Sector Awards night is being held on Tuesday 25th of September and we wish Jacques all the best.
